How We Rate Rowing Machines
Our reviews exist to help you choose the right rowing machine with confidence. This page explains exactly how we research and score every machine, so you can judge our verdicts for yourself.
Research-based, clearly labelled
We are transparent about our method. Our reviews are research-based assessments: we compile verified manufacturer specifications, weigh them against independent expert reviews and the consensus of verified-owner feedback, and apply a consistent scoring framework. Where we have genuine hands-on experience with a machine, we say so explicitly. We never invent test results or claim to have used a machine we haven't.
Every review lists the primary sources it draws on, and we revise scores as products change or new information emerges.
The six things we score
Each machine is scored from 0 to 5 on six dimensions. The overall score is a weighted average - not a simple mean - because some factors matter more to most buyers than others. The weightings are:
| Dimension | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance & feel | 25% | How natural, smooth, and effort-scaled the stroke is, and whether the resistance ceiling suits beginners through to strong rowers. |
| Build & durability | 20% | Frame quality, materials, expected lifespan, serviceability, and the strength of the manufacturer's warranty and support. |
| Monitor & tech | 15% | What the monitor measures (split, watts, stroke rate), accuracy, app connectivity, and any guided-content features. |
| Comfort & ergonomics | 15% | Seat comfort and height, handle and footplate design, and how the machine feels over longer sessions. |
| Footprint & storage | 10% | Size in use, whether it folds or stands upright, weight, and how easily it moves and stores. |
| Value | 15% | Overall value for money against the category - including resale value and total cost of ownership, not just sticker price. |
How to read the scores
- 4.5-5.0 - Outstanding; among the best in its category.
- 4.0-4.4 - Excellent; a strong, confident recommendation.
- 3.0-3.9 - Good; solid for the right buyer, with clear trade-offs.
- 2.0-2.9 - Fair; works within real limits - usually budget or light use.
- Below 2.0 - Weak; hard to recommend over the alternatives.
No paid placements
Scores reflect our genuine assessment of each machine. Our verdicts are never influenced by manufacturers or retailers. We are currently building out our reviews without affiliate links; if and when we add them, they will never affect a score, and our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy explain our standards in full.
