Noisy, Rattling, or Slipping Rowing Machine Chain: Fixes

A grinding chain or a handle that jerks on the drive is annoying and, left alone, wears the machine out faster. The fix depends on whether your rower uses a metal chain or a fabric/nylon cord - identify yours first, then follow the right section.

Metal chain: clean and lightly oil

Concept2 and many commercial ergs use a bike-style chain. A dry chain rattles, sounds rough, and feels notchy. The fix is simple:

  • Pull the handle out to expose the chain and wipe it down with a rag to remove old grime.
  • Apply a thin film of light machine oil (3-in-1 or a drip chain oil) along the chain - a few drops is plenty.
  • Cycle the handle in and out several times to work it in, then wipe off the excess so it doesn't fling onto the floor.

Do this every 50 hours of use or whenever the chain looks dry. Do not over-oil - excess oil collects dust and gums up the works.

Fabric cord: don't oil it

Water rowers and many magnetic rowers use a woven strap or bungee cord. These should never be oiled. If a cord rower is noisy, the sound usually comes from the recoil bungee or the flywheel/tank, not the strap. A frayed strap, however, is a safety issue - if you see fraying, stop using it and replace the strap before it snaps.

Handle slips or doesn't return smoothly

If the handle won't retract fully or returns slowly, the recoil mechanism (a bungee cord and shock cord) has lost tension. On most machines this is adjustable - there's a tensioning point near the flywheel where you can shorten the bungee. Consult your manual for the exact location, as forcing it can damage the cord.

Rattle or knock from the flywheel

A rhythmic knock that tracks with the flywheel (not the handle) can be a loose flywheel cage screw or, on water rowers, air bubbles in the tank. Tighten visible cage fasteners; for water rowers, a water purification tablet and topping up the tank to the correct level usually quiets things and keeps the water clear.

When to call support

If cleaning, light oiling, and tensioning don't help - or you hear a metallic grind from the flywheel bearing - contact the manufacturer. Bearings and clutches are serviceable parts on good machines.

Frequently asked questions

How do I quiet a noisy rowing machine chain?
On a metal-chain rower, wipe the chain and apply a thin film of light machine oil, then cycle the handle and wipe off the excess. Repeat roughly every 50 hours of use.
Should I oil my rowing machine cord?
Never oil a fabric or nylon cord - only metal chains. If a cord rower is noisy, the sound comes from the recoil bungee or flywheel, not the strap.
